This cult classic about the bonds you make in summer camp was actually filmed at a real, running summer camp in Pennsylvania called Camp Towanda. Kids can sign up to spend the summer here — though camp-age kids will more likely remember the Netflix sequel than the original 2001 movie. Camp director Mitch Reiter recalls when filming took place over a decade ago. In fact, many of the movie’s stars stayed in his house during the filming.
“It was really great being with the cast and crew; we had some great cast parties,” he says. “It was before cell phones… it was very special and would be hard to recreate it today. They were on location and had no connection to the outside world.”
Today, “wet hot groupies” as Reiter calls them, come by the camp for behind-the-scenes tours and to see some of the props and memorabilia still on the premises today. Plus, the set looks virtually exactly the same. It just exudes classic summer camp nostalgia.
“The camp still looks like it’s from the 1950s in a good way!” says Reiter.
